How To Clean and Maintain Stainless Steel Exhaust Tips

Exhaust tips take a beating. They are subjected to intense heat, carbon buildup from the engine, and a constant barrage of road grime, tar, and winter salt. Here is the ultimate guide to cleaning and maintaining your exhaust tips.

Why T304 Stainless Steel Matters

First, it’s important to know what you’re working with. Unlike cheaper 400-series steel used by many competitors, we strictly use premium T304 stainless steel in our systems. It has a much higher chromium and nickel content, which makes it highly resistant to rust and corrosion. However, corrosion-resistant doesn't mean dirt-proof. Carbon and road tar will still build up on the surface.

Step 1: The Basic Wash

Never clean your exhaust tips while they are hot. Let the vehicle cool completely. Start by washing the tips with the same high-quality car wash soap you use on your paint. Use a dedicated microfiber wash mitt or a soft-bristled brush to agitate the loose dirt and soot. Rinse thoroughly. For many daily drivers, this is all you need.

Step 2: Tackling Stubborn Carbon

If you have heavy, baked-on black carbon on the inside or lip of the tip, soap won’t cut it.

• Spray a heavy-duty dedicated wheel/exhaust cleaner onto the affected areas.
• Let it dwell for a minute, then hit it with a wash mitt or lightly scrub with a soft-bristled detailing brush. (Note: This method is for steel tips only - we don't recommend brush-scrubbing on ceramic-coated or carbon fiber tips as it can scratch the finish).

Step 3: Polish to Perfection

To restore that mirror shine to polished T304 tips, apply a quality metal polish with a microfiber towel or a foam polishing cone attached to a drill. Work the polish in until it turns black, then buff it off with a clean microfiber towel. The shine will be blinding.

Step 4: Protect Your Work

To make future cleaning a breeze, you can apply a high-temp ceramic spray coating to the tips. This creates a slick barrier that prevents carbon and road grime from bonding to the metal.

What About Ceramic-Coated Tips?
